Douglas (Doug) W. Bairstow (September 25, 1943 - September 17, 2026) became the principal oboe for the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in 1965 and held that position for over 44 years until his retirement in 2009. Remembered by many of his fellow WSO musicians as not just an incredibly gifted musician, but also a remarkable human being, Doug was friendly and kind to everyone he encountered. He has left a lasting legacy in the music community here in Manitoba and beyond.

Created in Doug’s memory, the Douglas Bairstow Endowed Chair Fund will support the WSO’s principal oboe position.
